While serving his country, he earned an Army Occupational Medal. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged.

On March 3, 1959, Herman united in holy matrimony to the former Martha Ann Smith. They first met in Enid, Oklahoma. To this union, Cloyce, Shelton, and Kerman were born. He was also the proud father of David and Rose. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who took great pride in the care and nurture of his family. He was later blessed with ten grandchildren, David, Jr., Kiona, Veronica, Laila, Providence, Perez, Shelton, Courtney, Taylor, and Keya.
