Herbert Logan Rieke, 82, of Dunlap, Illinois, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014. He was born to the late Herbert and Evelyn (Davis) Rieke, on January 2, 1932, in Alton, IL. Herb graduated from University High School in Carbondale where he excelled in football, track, and basketball. He received a BS and MS degree from SIU, Carbondale. Herbert is a 4 year Navy Korean War Veteran. He married Esther McLean in 1954, Oakdale, IL, and together they had 4 girls.

Herb was passionate about making an educational difference in the lives of many and worked in Mendota, IL, Earlville, IL, and Ottawa, IL as a teacher, coach, and principal before retiring in 1993. In addition, during the summer months, he worked as a camp professional in Northern Wisconsin.

Herb served as President of the Illinois Chapter of the Retired Teachers Organization and was a National Representative for INEA. After moving to Dunlap, Herb worked as a docent for the Lakeview/Riverfront Museum and was an active member of the Riverplex Fitness Center, and Northminster Presbyterian Church. He will always be remembered for his storytelling, his enjoyment of being with friends and family, and his enthusiastic love of life.

Herbert is survived by his loving wife, Esther; his brother Rick Rieke (SLC, Utah); and his 4 children and their husbands, Diana and Mike Underwood (Sheboygan, WI), Nancee and Dale Shipe (Fond du Lac, WI), Susan and Mark Schanowski (Winfield, IL), and Cynthia and John Mueller (Dunlap, IL). He was also extremely proud and devoted to his 10 grandchildren (Jennifer, Michael, Valerie, Elizabeth, Kurt, Eric, Brooke, Haley, Claire, and Andrea), one great-granddaughter (Brenna), and was looking forward to the arrival of a second great-granddaughter.
