Knowles, Herbert L., age 92, of Bristol, passed away Friday February 1, after a brief illness.  Born in New Britain, he was the eldest child of John Knowles and Jennie (Swanson) Knowles.  He played tenor sax and fronted a small band as “Les Knowles”, playing regularly at venues in the Springfield Mass area.  For many years he and his brother Kenneth Knowles operated the Knowles Internal Grinding Company on Willard Ave. in Kensington CT.  He was a private pilot and stationed his Navion aircraft at Robertson Airport in Plainville.  He is pre-deceased by his beloved wife Helen (Storto) Knowles and stepdaughter Alice Johnson of Bristol, also by a sister Jeanette Oliver, and brothers Milton, Kenneth, and Edwin Knowles.  He is survived by a sister Gladys Gallicchio and brother-in-law Dan Gallicchio of Hobe Sound Fl, a sister-in-law Shirley Knowles of Melbourne Fl., a stepson Robert Johnson, grandsons Brian and Bruce Johnson of North Canaan CT, and many nieces and nephews.
