Herbert Jacquemin Sliger Jr. was born on November 21, 1948 to Herb Sr. and Marina Sliger in Urbana, Illinois.  He returned to the Lord on March 7, 2021 in Scottsdale, Arizona after a battle with ALS.  Beloved husband, father, brother, and son, Herb had a full life.  In his youth, he participated in several sports, focusing on football.  He was the quarterback of the Urbana Tigers, graduating from Urbana High School in 1966.  He then went to the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in finance in 1970. 

Herb joined the Marines and was in the reserves as he went to law school at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1974.  He then returned to Illinois where he began his legal career that continued for the rest of his life. In the 1980’s, he also became a Certified Public Accountant while working full time.

Herb was passionate about and an expert in his chosen areas of the law—estates, trusts, and employee benefits, including pensions and other employer retirement plans, and was intimately familiar with relevant federal and state laws.  He worked for a short time in private practice and then at various banks as corporate counsel, recently achieving 30 years of service with J.P. Morgan Chase as Executive Director and Assistant General Counsel of the Office of the General Counsel. 

Herb was a member of the Arizona, Illinois, and Oklahoma State Bar Associations.  He was a renowned speaker on ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) and traveled the country speaking at various conferences.  Herb was also rated AV Preeminent consistently for 25 years by Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest possible peer review rating in his legal ability and ethical standards.

Herb loved his family, the Catholic church, eating out, and travel, with Aruba and Hawaii as his favorite destinations.

He is survived by his wife, Annie, his sister, Mary, his children, Lauren, Matthew, Nicholas, Claire, and Adam, and his grandchildren, Natalie and Noelle.
