Herbert “Herb” Ray DeKalb, 96, passed away at his son’s home in Sandoval on April 27, 2012. “Herb” was born on January 24, 1916 in Centralia the son of Ralph and Millie (Griffie) DeKalb. He married Rosalie Gordon on September 2, 1962 in Wamac. Survivors include three sons, Herbert Ralph DeKalb II & fiancé Rebecca White of Centralia, Russell DeKalb and wife Collene of Sandoval, and Faron DeKalb and wife Donna of Centralia; one daughter Tina Fezal of Centralia, a step-daughter Evelyn Brasher & husband Allen of Centralia; one brother John DeKalb of Centralia; ten grandchildren Samuel DeKalb, Herbert R. III & Joshua W. DeKalb, Shyanna & Matthew Steward, Misty & Tisha Finney, Brandi King, Kari Scheiffet & Sara Brasher; three great-grandchildren Aliayah & Serenity Steward, and Isaac Jacob DeKalb. He was preceded in death by his Parents Ralph and Millie, his wife Rosalie on November 11, 1984, one brother Robert DeKalb, and one sister Beulah Hensley. Mr. DeKalb was a retired Security Officer from St. Mary’s Hospital, a former Chief of Police for many towns, truck driver, and was a Sergeant in the Army during World War II from 1939 until his Honorable Discharge in 1944. He was a member of the American Legion Post 446, and the Illinois Sheriffs Association. He loved fishing, playing baseball with his kids, loved roses, and most of all loved spending time with his family.
