Herbert E. “Herb” Schmidt, 94, of Moberly, died Friday, April 7, 2017, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Herb was born October 22, 1922 in Moberly to Albert William and Christine Elizabeth (Heddinghaus) Schmidt.
He started working at March Sheet Metal at the age of 15 and continued there until the death of Mr. March in 1974. He then owned and operated the business with his wife and sons until his retirement in 1983.
He was a lifelong member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where he had served as Eucharistic minister, usher, and greeter. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Moberly Council since 1942. He became a 4th Degree Knight in 1952, and had served as Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator of 4th Degree and District Deputy. He was recently recognized for 75 years of continuous membership and service to the Knights of Columbus.
Herb married Lucille Dean Morgan on November 23, 1944 in Moberly, and she preceded him in death on December 19, 2007. Also preceding him in death were his parents, a son Gary Schmidt, a grandson Mikey Schmidt, Jr., a brother Leo, two sisters Rita Thies and Theresa Hopkins, daughter-in-law Donna Schmidt, brothers-in-law Joseph Thies, Levi Hopkins, Herman G. Morgan who was killed in World War II, Kenneth Ulrich, and a sister-in-law Lula “Sissie” Ulrich.
Survivors include his children, Margaret Creed, Moberly, Barbara Buckman and husband Michael of Shelbina, Mike Schmidt and wife Suzanne, and Joe Schmidt and wife Dawn all of Moberly; grandchildren, Monica Smith and husband Scott, Jennifer Robuck and husband Mikeal, Tom Creed and wife Wendy, Sara Kohl, Chrisandra Ratliff and husband Ben, Jacqueline White and husband Ron, Eric Buckman and wife Jennifer, Jody Dovin and husband Daniel, Rachael Fletcher and husband Chris, and Jessi Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Anni Tipton and husband Michael, Amanda and Kaylen Smith, Morgan, Case, and Josie Ratliff, Ian and Quinn Buckman, Maddie Creed, Chris and Jacob Robuck, Joey, Timmy, Anna, and Andrew White, Harper Kohl, J. and Sophie Dovin; a great-great-grandson August Tipton; sister-in-law Peggy Schmidt; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Herb enjoyed Knights of Columbus activities and woodworking, making things for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was also the #1 fan of Joshua 24:15 and enjoyed traveling with and listening to the band.
