Herbert Eugene “Gene” Cain, 82, of Clarksburg, passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 following a brief illness. Mr. Cain was born in Clarksburg on June 12, 1927, a son of the late George A. and Georgia Woofter Cain. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor Jean (Weekley) Cain in 2006, whom he married in 1949; and one brother, Robert L. Cain. He is survived by four sons, Richard E. Cain and his wife Betsy, Frederick, MD, G. Randall Cain and his wife Martha Lou, Quiet Dell, Roger A. Cain and his wife Shelby, Clarksburg, and Jeffrey D. Cain, Clarksburg; and seven grandchildren, Whitney, Bethany, Emily, Taylor, Morgan, Jesse and Ryan. He was a Seventh Day Adventist by faith. He was a 1945 graduate of Washington Irving High School and attended West Virginia University and Salem College. Mr. Cain was also a United States Navy Veteran.
He was employed by the Clarksburg Water Board for 41 years where he was general manager from 1972 to 1988 and was elected to the Board and served from 1989 – 1993. Gene was the driving force behind the construction of the new water treatment plant which he dedicated near the conclusion of his career. He was also a lifetime member of the American Water Works Association, where he was a member of the National Board of Directors from 1979 to 1982, and 1992 to1994.
