Herbert Douglas Gates was born September 21, 1943 to the late Herbert Gates and Bernice Prentice Gates in Keene, KY. He peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Herbert is survived by a devoted wife of almost 55 years, Barbara Clayton Gates, two beloved daughters Saundra Denise Prather (Carl) and April Dauen Gates, three adorable granddaughters Carlyssa Prather, Aniya Pharagood and Cariah Prather. The oldest of six siblings, he leaves: Alonzo Tracy Gates (Dale), Bernice Jackson (Dwight), William Turner Gates (Antonia), Thomas Wilson Gates, David Lee Gates (Nancy) and Robert Porter Gates (Linda). He leaves numerous family and friends.
Herbert was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Keene, KY. He joined the United States Army July 1961 and was honorably discharged three years later.
