Herbert Claiborne “Doc” Donavant, 92, of 1004 Mountain Road, Martinsville, VA died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Stanleytown Health and Rehabilitation Center, Bassett, VA. He was born on April 9, 1917 in Henry County, VA to the late Willie Jackson Donavant and Claudia Ethel Minter Donavant. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Donavant and Marvin Donavant. Mr. Donavant worked 23 years for Pannill Knitting Company in the Maintenance Department before retiring and was a member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Donavant served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the 893rd Tank Destroyer Division, Company C. He received medals for the European-African Middle Eastern Service, the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. Mr. Donavant participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. Surviving are his wife, Thelma McGuire Donavant of the home; a daughter, Brenda Davies and husband, Don of Cary, NC; a son, Michael C. Donavant and wife, Susan H. of Mechanicsville, VA; four sisters, Gladys Riddle, Gertrude McGuire, Lois Stegall and Ella Wright and husband, Andrew all of Martinsville, VA and one granddaughter, Donna Leigh Pellinger and husband, Thomas of Holden, MA.
