MC DONNELL, HERBERT L. “BUD” passed away early Thursday morning, November 5, 2015 at his home. He was born on April 9, 1923 in Grayling, MI, the son of James and Sylvia (Goss) McDonnell. Bud served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict as a pilot and Captain where he fought in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. Following World War II Bud and his brother, Clayton, operated the Grayling Air Service. After returning from the Korean Conflict, Bud, along with his partner, Jack Zimmerman owned and operated Zimmerman-McDonnell Realty Co. in Traverse City for 25 years.
He was also past president of the Traverse City Board of Realtors. In 1974, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen “Honey” Kaufmann. In 1983, Bud worked as a commercial realtor with Prudential Preferred Realtors until his retirement in 2005. He was a longtime active member of Lighthouse Community Church.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Honey McDonnell; son, Gary (Debora) McDonnell of Marquette; daughter-in-law, Pam McDonnell; three grandchildren, Travis McDonnell, Alison (Andy) Francisco, and Anna McDonnell; step-daughter, Kim Elliott; two step-grandchildren, Emily Elliott and Jenica (Garrett) Polifka; two step-great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were a son, Douglas McDonnell; step-son, Bruce Kaufmann; two brothers, Clayton and Lawrence McDonnell; and two sisters, Elaine Holmgren and Loretta Dingman.
