Herbert A. Schoenfeld of Deshler, NE the son of August and Martha(Koerwitz) Schoenfeld was born December 7, 1906 in rural Deshler, NE. He departed this life Saturday July 26 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE at the age of 101.
Herb was baptized December 16, 1906 and confirmed May 8, 1921by Pastor Wm Cholcher at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Deshler. He attended St. Peter Lutheran School. The following year, his family moved to Davenport, Nebraska. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1926. Herb’s family then moved back to Deshler. Herb began employment at the Deshler Broom Factory making wick brooms, Deshler Creamery and The Gambles Store in Hebron, NE.
Herb was married to Helene Ignowski on June 6,1938. Helene was a home economics teacher at Deshler Public School. Following their marriage, Herb worked by the Deshler Roller Mills until he was called into the service during World War II. While Herb served his country in the United States Navy, Helene drove to the Bruning Air Base where she worked folding parachutes. Soon the demand for teachers became great during the war years and she again started teaching. Herb was discharged from the Navy at the end of World War II. The couple then lived in Deshler. Herb then began his career in law enforcement, first serving as a deputy and then being elected as the Thayer County Sheriff. He worked in law over twenty years.
