Herbert Anthony Nothaus, 97, of Carlyle, Illinois, born April 8, 1913, on the family farm near Huey, Illinois, died Saturday, January 1, 2011, at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.
He was a United States Army World War II veteran. As a member of the Greatest Generation he enlisted in April 1941 in the California National Guard, which later became the 40thInfantry Division of the U.S. Army.
He attained the rank of master sergeant and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was discharged in November 1945.He retired from Scott Air Force Base where he served as supervisory management director in the central civilian personnel office.
He was preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his children, Paula N., nee Johnson, Nothaus, whom he married April 8, 1942 in Los Angeles, California, and who died February 15, 1972; his parents, Aloysius and Emma, nee Nettles, Nothaus; and one sister, Gertrude Dalhaus.Surviving are his wife, June I., nee Townsend, Nothaus, whom he married July 21, 1973, in Carlyle, Il.; a son, H. Neil (Kathy) Nothaus, Carlyle, Il.; and three daughters, Paulette A. (Tom) Horsman, Savage, Mn.; Pamela A. (Tom) James, Trenton, Il.; and Patricia A. (Brad) Baer, Collinsville, Il.; and three sisters, Verena Nothaus, Carlyle, Il, ; Mary Davis, Carlyle, Il.; and Isabel Brinkman, Beckemeyer, Il.In addition, he has five grandsons: Patrick (Rhonda) Nothaus, Strasburg, Il.; Barclay (Suzanne) Nothaus, Valley Park, Mo.; Brian James, Trenton, Il.; Brandon James, Urbana, Il.; and Brent (fiancée Nicole Wilhite) James, St. Jacob, Il.; and four great-grandsons: Briar, Wyatt, Owen and Levi Nothaus.
