Henry Lee Roush was born to William Earl and Grace Dena Vander Linden Roush on January 4, 1928, near Prairie City, Iowa. He died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of eighty-two.
Henry was the youngest of eight children, one sister and six older brothers. After having lost both of his parents to death by the age of nine, Henry went to live with his sister, Ina, in Prairie City where he later attended Prairie City High School. When he was fifteen, he moved to Monterey, California, to live with his brother Ernest.
Henry was a true “jack-of-all trades” who loved to tinker. He worked as a “parts” man, realtor, barber, and farmer most of his life. His true love was barbering, and he owned and operated barber shops in Pella and Oskaloosa for over fifty-three years His shops were known for his “high-and-tight” signature cut and a place to discuss politics and current events. Henry continued to barber with his loyal customers until one week before his passing. As a part-time farmer, he enjoyed sharing new calves, piglets, and sheep with his five grandchildren. When he retired from farming, he and Mary continued to garden, growing his favorite tomato plants.
Henry loved to collect antiques and his prized Aladdin lamp and carnival glass collections were well-known among friends.
Henry enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren immensely and often remarked how much joy they brought him.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Mary; his two children and their spouses: Ted and Wanda Roush of Pella, and Deanna and Jeff Barrett of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren: Valerie and Chad Huyser, Andrea and Brian Meyer, Allison Roush, Alexandria Roush Barrett, and Riley Barrett; five great-grandchildren: Camryn Grace, Gage, and Cor Huyser, Aubrey Roush Meyer and Olivia Grace Meyer.
He is preceded in death by his father William Earl, mother Grace Dena Vander Linden, his brothers Ray, Ernest, Harold, Leo, Howard, Burton, and sister, Ina Roush Kane, and brother-in-law, Billy E. Brown.
