Henry (Hank) Edward Menges, age 76, passed away on March 14, 2014 following a bout of pneumonia. At the time of his death he was residing in Nampa Idaho.
He was born May 7th, 1937 to Leonard E. Menges of Hoisington, Kansas and Matilde Ana Calero of Madrid, Spain in Manila, at the Manila army post in the Philippine Islands. At the age of eleven he traveled to the Port of San Pedro, California aboard a ship from the Philippines after World War II, with his younger sibling Irma Iliene. They settled in San Francisco where the family remained and three more children would be born: Leonard E. Menges, Jr, Ann Victoria, and James Domingo.
Hank joined the United States Marine Corps in 1954 at the age of seventeen. He served twenty one years before retiring as a Gunnery Sergeant in October 1975. After retiring from the Marine Corps (however once a Marine, always a Marine) he worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Bannock County Sheriff’s department and then as a Court Marshall for the Bannock County Courts before moving to Nampa, Idaho. This was his first move to Nampa before moving to Twin Falls, Blackfoot, Denver, and Colorado Springs before eventually his final move back to Nampa. During his final years he remained busy working security, tour bus guide or as a bus driver/trainer for Brown Bus Company for Vallivue and Nampa School district. He was quite active with the Elks Lodge holding several positions including Exalted Ruler. During the last several years he was a member of the Valley Corvettes club and was very proud of his Corvette and the trophies he won for it. He was also a volunteer at the Ada County Sheriff’s Office and Mercy Medical Center installing LifeLine units something that he enjoyed immensely.
After a brief first marriage that produced two children (Joseph and Crystal), he met Rhonda Jean Atwood in 1973 who would later become his wife of 23 years. Together they would raise three children over 30 years of being together.
He is survived by his son, Roy Lee (Lorene) Menges of Nampa; daughters, Raquel Lynn Durrant (often called Kelly) of Nampa and Amanda Jeanette George of Denver; granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Edward Menges and Matilde Calero.
Many had a name for Hank whether it be son, brother, husband, dad, or friend but most will always remember him for what he liked to refer to himself as “Brown and Beautiful”. Whether you knew him for five minutes or seventy plus years he left a remarkable impression that no other could and he will be missed.
The family would like to thank the staff, especially the nurses, of the Telemetry Unit at St. Luke’s Meridian for their kindness and compassion with not only dad, but also his family and friends during his final time.
