Henry Bernard Burke, Jr., a life-long resident of Marianna, passed away Tuesday, March 16 at 9:30 PM at Jackson County Hospital. Born November 17, 1927, in Pensacola, Henry moved to Marianna two years after his birth with his parents, Mildred Crane Burke and Henry B. Burke Sr. of DeFuniak Springs. A football quarterback and basketball player at Marianna High School, Henry graduated in 1945, and the following fall enrolled at University of Alabama. In 1946 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served a year before returning to U of A. It was then that he met Mary Anne Jones of Booneville, MS., and “The Stars Fell on Alabama.” Henry graduated from the U of A School of Business in 1949, married Mary Anne in July, 1950 and returned to Marianna, where he worked as a salesman for McCaskill Ford Motor Co. for several years. In 1961 Henry began his career as an agent with New York Life Insurance Co. which continued for over 48 years, earning his CLU, ChFC designations and many other honors. Henry was a long-time member of Rotary Club, serving as president and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow of the club.
