He graduated from Elgin High School in 1938 as one of twelve students. After attending courses at the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, he worked with his father and brothers, Bill and Bruce in the construction business. On September 1, 1941, Ben married Helen Marie Tibesar in the Catholic Church in Saint Charles, MN. He then began his own land development and contracting business in the Plainview area. After developing Island View, he continued a successful contracting and land development career, often partnering with his brother, Bill. Ben was an avid fisherman and hunter, both in the Mississippi River Valley as well as near his cabin up on the Gunflint Trail. In the 1980s, he and his brother Bill acquired a number of lots around a lake near the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota and built and sold cabins on them.
