Henrietta Viola Nokes Lewis, fondly known as “Ret” went from labor to reward on Thursday, July 13, 2017. She was born on November 9, 1924, in Poolesville, Maryland to the late Charles and Florence Nokes.

Henrietta was born and raised in the Union Wesley AME Zion Church where she was active in the Varick Christian Endeavor Society, many of the youth activities and the Senior Choir.

In February 1947, she was married to Carl Raymond Lewis, Sr., who preceded her in death. Two sons were born of this union; Carl Raymond Lewis, Jr., and Charles Albert Lewis.

Henrietta retired in 1985 from her U.S. Government career, following her work tenure with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Civil Service Commission (now known as the Office of Personnel Management).

After her retirement, Henrietta devoted her time to caring for her Great Aunt Ret (for whom she was named after), traveling and enjoying the growth and nurturing her three grandchildren. She also devoted a great portion of her time working in the Rectory of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, which she attended for over 60 years before returning to her home church, Union Wesley AME Zion Church.

Henrietta leaves to cherish her memory her two devoted sons, Carl Raymond and Charles Albert; her devoted daughter-in-law Judith Ann; her sisters Doris Jean Poindexter, Yvonne Smith, and Rene Fleming; her brother George Nokes; her brothers-in-law, James Lucas and Robert Fleming; two grandsons, Brent and Brian O’Neill (Ja’Ne) and one granddaughter, Cherelle James; two loving goddaughters, Bettina Lucas and Dayna Fleming; two great-granddaughters and so many more loving relatives and friends.
