Helmer Johannes Aberg died on April 18th surrounded by loved ones after living a wonderful, long, healthy life. He was born September 29, 1909, in Tving, Sweden, a small town near the City of Karlskrona in the Southern province of Blekinge. He was the son of the late Hilda (Olsson) and Enock Åberg. Helmer came to the US with his father in 1928, and capitalizing on their farming background from Sweden, began working in the landscaping business in New Rochelle, NY. As their business expanded throughout much of Westchester County, they eventually bought property in Rye, NY where they established a six acre retail tree nursery, called Aberg’s Nursery. As Helmer became more experienced in the nursery business as well as planting design and landscape contracting, the business thrived, and when his father passed away, he and his wife, Linnea, continued to successfully run the business for more than 40 years. The extent of his planting projects is significant with many trees now reaching landmark status. He married Linnea in 1948 and had 2 sons, Lennart and Roland. With the start of a growing family, Helmer built a house right on the same property as the nursery, where he and Linnea continued to live right up through their retirement years. When Helmer’s stamina began to decline in the late eighties, they decided to eventually sell both the property and the house in Rye, after which they moved to the Covenant Village in Cromwell, CT in Nov 2001.

While Helmer worked hard his entire life, he also enjoyed life and his family. He and his wife were active members of the VASA Order in New York, a Swedish-American fraternal organization, where they enjoyed a very active social life with the greater Swedish community.
