Helen Josephine Pokorny Wiggs, 89, of New Buffalo, Michigan passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, April 19, 2014 at Carol’s Home in New Buffalo surrounded by loving family and friends.Helen was born January 10, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Vaclav “James” and Barbara (Kuska) Pokorny. The family moved to New Buffalo where Helen attended and graduated from New Buffalo High School.

She was employed as a legal secretary for TC Mullen. She married Harold Wiggs on October 17, 1964 at St. John United Church of Christ in New Buffalo where she continued her membership. Helen and Harold enjoyed traveling the countryside. She was proud of her husband’s military career and supported him in his duties at the Edward T. Sexton American Legion Post 169 in New Buffalo. Helen spent the last year at Carol’s Home Adult Foster Care in New Buffalo where she not only received excellent care, but developed precious friendships with the staff and residents. It truly was home to her.

Survivors include her family, Bob Vorel, Donna Vorel and Doug Vorel of New Buffalo; Marcia and Daniel Oney, James and Shalah Oney, Taylor and Baylie, Natalie and Craig Crimmins, Tyler, Charles, Abbey, Luke, Nathan and Mary of Oklahoma; Barbara Rountree, Maureen and Carleen of Arizona; Allen and Debra Pokorny, Christopher and Nicholas of Florida; special friends, Betsy Cole, Sandra Orange, Betty Krishner, Melody Horn and her friends at Carol’s Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold on June 23, 2008, nephews Richard Pokorny, Frank Lee “Butch” Vorel Jr, and Melvin Vorel, and many beloved family members and friends.
