Helen S. Jedele, age 101 years, former long-time Niles resident died on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 in Tucson, Arizona.
She was born on March 18, 1913 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Lewis G. and Matilda S. (Hornung) Springer. She was graduated from Ann Arbor High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the former Michigan State Normal College, now Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. She was employed for many years as a teacher in the Howell, Michigan school district.
On July 20, 1938 in Ann Arbor, Michigan she married Paul W. Jedele. They came to Niles in 1950 and Paul established Paul’s Toggery, a retail men’s and boy’s clothing store. Later, Helen purchased and operated The Mayfair Shoppe for junior misses and women’s clothing. They both retired in 1982, and moved to Arizona in 1999.
In Niles, Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a sustaining member of the Niles Service League, and a member of the Cosmopolitan Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on August 3, 2006, and by her parents, Lewis and Matilda Springer.
Surviving family includes her children, Janet (& Robert) Paullette and Thomas (& Nancy) Jedele, both of Tucson; granddaughters, Terri (& Don) Francis, Laurie (& Steve) Erickson, and Kathie Newton; and great-grandchildren Katie, Lindsey, Nicole, and Michael Erickson, Rebecca and Benjamin Newton, and Annie and Andrew Francis.
A combined service for Helen and Paul Jedele will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Niles with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence of the church officiating.
