Helen Rachut Smith of Burt passed away on October 30, 2018, at KRHC in Algona, Iowa.

Helen Adene Rachut, the daughter of Hermann and Emma (Bolgren) Rachut, was born on September 2, 1927, in Algona, Iowa. Her family lived for a short time in Titonka, Iowa before moving to Burt. Helen graduated from Burt High School and attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa to become a teacher. Her teaching career began in Corwith, Iowa.

On May 28, 1950, she was united in marriage with Edward Smith, Jr. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. They raised 2 children, Jill and Joel. Shortly after Joel started school, Helen went to work as a teacher for the Head Start Program in Kossuth County. She taught for many years in various towns around the county until her retirement. Helen was very active in her church and her church family was very dear to her. She was also involved in the Burt Women’s Club and the Burt Library Board.

Helen is survived by her children, Jill (Michael) Hamilton of Burt and Joel Smith of Swea City, and her grandchildren, Cade (Ariel) Hamilton of Hickory, NC, and Eden (Alex) Hardy of Cypress, TX. She is also survived by a sister and her husband, Sheila and Steve Crist of North Highlands, CA, a brother-in-law, Robert Davis of Red Bluff, CA, and a sister-in-law, Linda Rachut Miller of Lansing, MI. In addition, she also has 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister and husband, Mary Jean and Harold Bern, her brother, Hermann Rachut, and another sister, Stella Davis.
