Helen Paltell died peacefully at home in Whitemarsh on Ash
Wednesday, March 2, 2022. Her final weeks were filled with family and
friends who were lovingly supported by the skilled, caring members of
the Brightview/Wellspring Community and Gilchrist Hospice Care. She
was one hundred years old.
The third child among six, of Mary and Frank Maunes of Baltimore,
Helen was married to Allen Paltell, a Baltimore business owner who
died in 2015. Two sons, Eric and Jack Paltell, their wives, Nancy and
Tina, and four grandchildren, Skyler, Jessica, Eric and KC Paltell, survive
her. She graduated from Baltimore Parochial Schools and attended
Catonsville Community College. After raising her children as a stay-at-
home Mom, she began work in education and library science, eventually
becoming a full-time librarian in Del-Ray Beach, Florida where she lived
for many years before returning to Baltimore.
moods, an independent spirit, a sharp tongue and an unparalleled
capacity for work, in the home and the workplace.
Like many of her peers growing up in Baltimore in the early part of the
twentieth century, she lacked formal education, and admired those who
acquired it. Notwithstanding limited formal schooling, she accomplished
more than many. She raised three sons, Jack, Bob and Eric, all of whom
attended college; and in her fifties, after her parenting obligations
relaxed, she attended Catonsville Community College and began work in
early childhood education. Subsequently, she moved to Delray Beach,
Florida and began work in library science, which she continued until her
retirement at age eighty-three.
Given the gift of robust health, she remained physically and mentally
active well into her ninth decade.
She returned to Baltimore in 2019 into the Brightview Assisted Living
Community of Whitemarsh where she remained active and comfortable
until her death.
