March 30, 1927 – January 10, 2014 Maria Elena Pedroza, IHM (Nena/Sister Mary Olivia) died on January 10 at age 86, at Westminster Gardens in Duarte, from complications of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. She had previously lived at Pilgrim Place, Claremont, after she retired from teaching. She had been a member of the Immaculate Heart Community for 64 years. Maria Elena was 9th in the family of 17 children of Leonard and Aurelia Pedroza who raised their family in Azusa, CA. As a Sister of the Immaculate Heart, Maria Elena taught at Our Lady Queen of Angels and St. Vibiana’s in Los Angeles. Those assignments were followed by Sacred Heart, Lancaster; Mission School in San Luis Obispo; St. Gertrude in Bell Gardens, and Immaculate Conception in Colton. Following the establishment of Immaculate Heart Community in 1970, she went on to teach with the Chino Unified School District at El Rancho School, retiring in 1994, but resumed teaching at St. Frances of Rome in Azusa until 1996, when she retired for good. She also taught religion classes at St.
