Helen Manning Maiorano, 91, beloved wife to the late orthopedic surgeon Joseph F. Maiorano, Jr. and longtime resident of Orange, passed away peacefully on September 29th 2014 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a long illness. Helen was born in New Haven, CT on May 12, 1923, the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Manning of New Haven. She graduated from the Hospital of St. Raphael’s School of Nursing in 1945 and continued working there for many years. During World War II, Helen worked as a cadet nurse in the Army Nurse Corps at Cushing General Hospital in Massachusetts. In later years, she was employed as an industrial health nurse for the Southern New England Telephone Company in Bridgeport until her retirement in 1985. While there, Helen and a colleague, Gertrude Carlson, initiated a program for recovering alcoholics.
Helen is survived by her four children: Karen (Mark) Esposito of Branford, Helene (Harry) Baum of Hampton, Lisa Maiorano and Joseph F. Maiorano III, both of Orange. She leaves four grandchildren, Kathryn (Jesse) Manning Gelber of Brooklyn, N.Y., Paula (Michael) Sala of South Windsor, Jay (Grover) Rees IV of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Rebecca (David) Lacki of Columbus, Ohio. In addition, she leaves 2 great-grandchildren, Alina and Tessa Lacki. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Walter F. Manning Jr. of San Diego, and two sisters, Shirley Allen of Newtown and Ruth Grenon of East Haven.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Peter Rogol and Dr. Mark Drabinski and their supporting staffs for their unending patience, extraordinary support, great compassion, and outstanding skills in dealing with Mom’s health issues.
