Helen Louise Caughman Alexander entered this life on December 13, 1924 and departed this life on July 6, 2022 in Huntington, WV.
She accepted Christ at an early age. While residing in Moulton, she was attended Smith Chapel C.M.E. and Freeman Tabernacle Baptist Church. While in West Virginia she united with the Full Gospel Assembly Church in Huntington. Her life revolved around Church from a very early existence until she took her last breath.
She wore many hats to her family and friends. The start of the hats was her being the family matriarch. She was the oldest living member of the Williams family. The other hats she wore were Historian, Educator, Storyteller, “Mother”, Sister, Wife, Friend, and a Fabulous Aunt. She had no children of her own but she made a connection with all children by mothering them and encouraging them especially her nieces and nephews.
After graduating high school she attended Morris Harvey College in Harper’s Ferry, WV where she received a degree in Home Economics. She later attended the University of Illinois and obtained her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught in her lifetime in three states(WV, AL, IL). She held the highest degree in the family and encourage all of her family to do the same.
While in Chicago she met her husband Ray Alexander from Moulton, AL. She married him and told us that after 50 years she was going to trade him in but she remained married to him until his departure from this life on July 18, 2006. She stayed steadfast in the care of her mother, Pearl Brannon until she passed away in March 2003. Her father was killed in a mining accident when she was a young child.
Her sister (Marjorie Richardson Caughman Daniels) and children (James, Peacolia, Sterrett and Raynette) were her life. She lived and provided for them all. Eleven months after her mother’s death, she laid to rest her sister. When her sister was married, she had them to think it was a birthday party until the pastor arrived on the porch and explained the reason he was there and that was to marry Marjorie. She was the catalyst for things “jumping off”
During her life time she was able to see a black President and a black female Vice-President.
Helen spent the last eight years with Raynette Danieis and Children (Clifton, D’Mitri, Micah). As we coin the phrase “RET TO GO” describes her best. Auntie, as we affectionally call her we mourn the loss of the “Oak Tree” but we know that her branches and roots will remain strong and encouraging. She leaves behind four generations of nieces and nephews that loved her and will forever cherish her memory. She is now gone but never forgotten.
