Helen Francis Pettey Sanders was born September 18, 1932 to the late Annie Pearl Reynolds and Charlie Pettey in Decatur, Alabama. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Jessie Lee and Mary Lee Reynolds. She was fondly known as “Muh.” She took special joy in caring for her family. On September 6, 2013, she left this world quietly and went into the Master’s arms.
Helen accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was united in fellowship with Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church, where she remained until her health began to fail. She loved God and her favorite scripture was Psalm 23. Her faith, strength, love and caring spirit were a blessing to all who knew her.
Helen was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Clinton Matthews Sanders, Jr. on April 20, 1951. God blessed them with six children. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jessie Lee and Mary Reynolds, parents, husband, daughter, Mary G. Brown, and two loving sons, Dwight Sanders and Garland Sanders, two brothers, Clarence Jackson and Eugene Jackson.
Helen leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Loretta S. Allen, Jacqueline Sanders, and Alex Sanders, of Decatur, Alabama, Mark Shabazz (Belinda), Rockford, Illinois; a step-daughter, Barbara Birdsong, Decatur, Alabama; five brothers, Charles Jackson (Viola), Jessie Jackson (Margaret), Russell Jackson (Kathy), Gregory Jackson (Dara), of Decatur, Alabama, and Jameel Jackson, Huntsville, Alabama, 10 grandchildren, Alvin, Fedious, Darren, John Brown, Jarrod Hampton, La’Tira Haynie, Stephanie and Georgetta Allen, Naim and Ashanti Sanders.
