Helen Elizabeth Chandler,90 died Sunday March 13, 2022 with family and friends by her side at The Palace Gardens in Homestead, FL.
Helen was born March 26, 1931, in Carbondale, IL, to Stewart C. Chandler and Mildred Annis Chandler.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, James “Jimmy” Chandler; Jean Chandler Mathews and Charles “Chuck” Chandler.
Helen later relocated to Southern California. Being a free spirit, she took a small inheritance from her aunt and became a licensed pilot. With a sense of adventure and inspired by books, films and photos about the underwater world during the 1950’s and early 1960’s Helen became an avid SCUBA Diver.
Helen accepted a teaching position at the newly opened Campbell Drive Elementary School in Homestead where she remained until she retired at 62. Fluent in Spanish Helen taught English to speakers of other languages and taught all of the elementary grades.
Music and art played an important role in Helen’s life. Helen played many stringed instruments including guitars, banjo and dulcimer. In retirement she picked up water color painting.
She is survived by her children David S Eckess, Little Rock, AR and Jean Michelle Walsh, Miami, FL; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
