Helen E. Vonderheid, 97, of Freeport died on October 14, 2012 at the Stephenson County Nursing Center.

Helen was born February 9, 1915 in Webster City, IA to Frank and Olga (Wulkau) Jones. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1933. Later she served as secretary to the school board of Webster City and was also the superintendent’s secretary. Helen married Norman Vonderheid in Chicago on August 7, 1943. She and Norman were active in Lutheran Schools in Chicago and Kankakee. Norman was a teacher. Helen was a Concordia member. Helen worked at Kankakee Savings and Loan for seven years. When the family moved to Hoopeston, IL she worked for 17 years in the Accounts Receivable Department of Joan of Arc canning company.

She was a member of the National Secretaries Association. Helen and Norman moved to Freeport in 1988. They were active members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Helen is survived by her son, Jerold Vanderheid and her daughter, Paula (Carl) Beichel and two nieces, Judy Stipes and Susan Yorty.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her parents, Frank and Olga Jones; two sisters, Margaret Rand and Gladys Porter; and a nephew, Roger Porter.
