Helen Dorothy Verrill, 93, of Hamden died peacefully on May 3, 2011 at The Connecticut Hospice, Branford surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle after a short illness. Helen was born in New Haven Feb. 1, 1918, second daughter of Joseph and Mae Merrill. She graduated from Commercial High School and was employed briefly following graduation by the New Haven Clock Company. She eloped on 20 Aug 1937 with Addison Harding Verrill and enjoyed his lifelong attention and affection, raising three children together, until his death in 1989. Helen was also predeceased by her son Addison Harding Verrill Jr., her sister Katherine Heaphy McGinness, and her parents Joseph and Mae Merrill.

She is survived by her son Richard Harding Verrill of Hamden CT, her daughter Pamela Harding Verrill Walker of Niagara Falls Ontario Canada (spouse of Charles Ryall), grandchildren and great grandchildren.Lover of leopard prints, baseball caps, casino adventures, proper grammar, “Judge Judy”, her shag rug, bargains and her rotary dial telephone, Helen consistently demonstrated compassion for those less fortunate and a strong sense of patriotism. She enjoyed her membership in the Hamden Elks Lodge and participated in many of their events and travel. Helen asked to express her thanks for their compassionate care, the following: Dr. Paul Monaco and staff, Whitney Manor Rehabilitation Center and staff, her aide Linda Adamowski, St. Raphael’s Hospital, and Pat Grande.
