Helen was born January 12, 1922 to Joe and Vera Johnson in Slaton, Texas. She passed away August 19, 2007 in Flagstaff, AZ surrounded by her family.

Helen married Fred Swagerty on January 12, 1942 in Texas. Shortly after Helen and Fred headed west to Arizona. Together they raised their children and began their life journey. Helen was a devout member of the First United Methodist Church for nearly 80 years. She was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star in Winslow and an active member in the UMW for nearly 30 years.

Helen taught Sunday school and was well-known for her arts and crafts. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Old granny”, were the apples of her eye. Prior to her passing, Helen stated that she didn’t know of one enemy she had made or at least she didn’t think so! Her love for family and God was a beautiful example to all who knew her.

Helen is survived by her husband of 65 years, Fred, Her son Colby (Sharon) of Southlake, Texas and her daughter Cinda (Leroy) Sawyer of Flagstaff. Her sisters Betty (Stan) Swartz of Phoenix and Bobbie Ruth (Sam) Hogue of Stratford, OK. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Devon (Lynne) Sawyer of Winslow, Jenesa (Clint) Dobrinski of Cottonwood, Brandie (Urs) Riner of Flagstaff, Gary Swagerty and Scott Swagerty of Texas, Ginger (Ian) Cameron of California, and Jennifer (Timothy) Truesdale of Washington.

Old Granny also leaves behind 5 great-grandchildren CJ, Jordan, Brennan, TC, and Owen and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Katie Jo.
