Helen was born on September 9, 1924, at Flandreau, South Dakota, to Watson and Addie (Alberts) Sutherland. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school prior to graduating from Flandreau High School where she was active in Speech and Debate. Helen attended the University of South Dakota for two years, then earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska College of Nursing where she later became an instructor.

On November 13, 1949, Helen married Dr. Joseph David, Jr. The couple made their home in Lynch, Nebraska. While raising their family, Helen also assisted her husband as a nurse in his medical office. The family moved to Omaha for a year before coming to Norfolk in 1964.

Helen was a 75-year member of the Methodist Church and was active in the Methodist Women’s Circle. She was a member of Chapter GS P.E.O., John G. Neihardt Chapter of Delphian, and Ida Nichola Book Club. Helen volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Mobile and was active in the Northeast Nebraska Medical Auxiliary. She and her husband were charter members of the Norfolk chapter of the International Wine and Food Society and she enjoyed playing in two bridge clubs.

Helen is survived by her children and their spouses: Pamela and Dr. Leon Handke of Norfolk, Shelley and Dr. Timothy Davy of Norfolk, Dr. Jeffrey and Sarah David of Lincoln, and Drs. Renee and James Albin of Norfolk; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 56 years.
