Helen D. Longen

Helen Longen was born on October 21, 1922, in Schellsburg, Pennsylvania, and passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 8, 2017, at her home in Ellicott City.

Helen spent her childhood years on the family farm in Pennsylvania, and attended school in the nearby town. After graduating from Bedford High School, she enrolled in and completed business school in Cumberland, MD. Helen began her career as a bookkeeper at a local Ford garage in Cumberland. She later was recruited to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

While working at the USDA, Helen met Francis (Frank) Longen, of Gregory, South Dakota, and they were soon married. They spent more than 60 years living in Adelphi, Maryland, where they raised three children.

Helen spent most of her family life taking care of the home and raising their children. During their retirement years, she spent more time on her many hobbies, such as sewing, needlecrafts, baking, and bead crafts. Helen and Frank both enjoyed travelling, gardening and dancing.

Helen was a faithful and active member of Adelphi Presbyterian Church. She volunteered weekly with office related activities and participated in the religious and social activities of the church.

Just five days before Helen’s passing, her beloved husband of 63 years, Frank Longen, preceded her to their eternal home. Helen is is survived by Deborah Judy (Chris), Roberta Saah (Michael), James Longen (Julie); grandchildren, Dana Judy, Nicole and Michelle Saah, Christopher Longen (Jessica), Jenna and Luke Longen; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Avery, and Sawyer.
