Helen Carmello, age 96, of Youngstown, formerly of the Lexington Courtyard in Salem, where she lived for 8 years, died Tuesday afternoon December 25, 2012 at Austinwoods Nursing Center in Austintown. She was born September 27, 1916 in Youngstown, Ohio, daughter of the late Frank and Noemi (Lepore) Ficocelli. Helen worked for many years for Strouss-Hirshberg Company in Youngstown. She was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Youngstown, and St. Anthony’s Altar and Rosary Society. Her husband, Nick Carmello, whom she married, April 17, 1944, preceded her in death August 11, 2002. Survivors include two sons, Felix (Joanne) Carmello of Canfield and Edward (Kathy) Carmello of Belair, Maryland; daughter, Marena Carmello of Salem; and six grandchildren, Nick (Angeligue) Carmello, Kristin (Dave) MacBride, Anthony (Kimberly) Carmello, Michael (Amy) Carmello, Jason (Jen) Carmello, Andrew (Kelly) Carmello; and eleven great-grandchildren, whom she called “her babies” and brought extreme joy to her life. Two sisters, Dorothy Soricelli and Kathryn Marsco, and three brothers, Michael, Nick and Anthony Ficocelli also preceded her in death.
