Helen Mildred Callam, 93, of Pawnee City, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Pawnee Manor in Pawnee City, Nebraska. Helen Mildred (Hartman) Callam was born at the family farm north of Seneca, Kansas, on Dec. 1, 1920, to Chris F. and Edith May (Fluent) Hartman. She grew up on this farm, attended grade school at Rogers #28 and high school at Seneca, Kansas. Her mother passed away when she was 16 and her brother, Willis, was 7. Helen kept house for her father and helped with raising her brother. In September, 1944, they moved to Seneca, Kansas. Her father farmed and drove a school bus.
In 1951, through mutual friends, she met Theron Callam of Pawnee City, Nebraska. On April 3, 1952,in Seneca, Kansas, they were married in the home of Judge and Mrs. Randall and Helen came back to the farm. To this union two sons were born: Clyde Hugh of Omaha, Nebraska and Reed Wesley of Palm Springs, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theron, Dec. 25, 1995; her mother in 1937; her father in 1986, uncles, aunts and many friends. Her generation spanned from horse-drawn equipment to moon landings, space stations, several wars and many conflicts on foreign soils. From rural electricity to the internets. How could life be dull with all this activity going on?
