Helen Barrow Parkton passed away on June 1, 2020, at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 92 years old and a lifelong resident of Okaloosa County. Helen was born in Niceville, Florida, on January 27, 1928, and was the daughter of Mallory Barrow and Gertrude Ward Barrow. Helen has two sisters Nellie Fleming of Crestview and Ruth Enders of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.

Helen attended Crestview High School where she was a 1945 graduate. She held the prized position of Drum Major for the school band. Helen continued her education at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, and graduated in 1952 with a degree in education. Helen retained a passion for education and taught in the Okaloosa County school system for 37 years. During the course of her career she was an educator at Crestview High School, Silver Springs Elementary, Southside Elementary, Baker High School, Fort Walton Beach Elementary, and New Heights Elementary School. She culminated her career in 1995 at Ocean City Elementary in Fort Walton Beach.

Helen was a founding member of the Elkettes at the Elks Lodge #1795 on Okaloosa Island.

Helen is survived by her two loving children, Denise (Patrick) Chipley and Daniel (Mindy) Parkton. Four grandchildren; Vanessa, Christie, Brian (Mollie), and Shawn (Nichole).  Six great grandchildren; Seth, Summer, Logan, Ashton, Easton, and Mallory. In addition, her loving canine companion Maggie. To her grandchildren and great grandchildren Helen will forever be known as “Maw Maw.”
