Hazel Cloaninger McNeely, 97, of Statesville, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville.

She was born July 28, 1919 in Statesville to the late Jettie Ostwalt and Troy R. Cloaninger.

Mrs. McNeely graduated from Celeste Henkel High School and Mitchell College. She was employed by Cornelius Electric Membership Corp. (now Energy United) for 25 years as a bookkeeper, and as a Secretary for both Race Street United Methodist Church and Suburban Propane Gas Company. She loved traveling, reading, and doing volunteer work.

She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder, Clerk of the Session, Sunday School Teacher, Women of the Church, Moderator and Church Secretary. She also served Salem Presbytery for 18 years on Small Church and Church Growth and Development Committees.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S. McNeely, and two brothers Frank and Max Cloaninger.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela M. (Kenneth) Carpenter of Statesville; son, Rodney S. (Carolyn) McNeely of Troutman; sister, Margaret C. Flynt of Knoxville, TN; brother, Joe (Julia) Cloaninger of Statesville; grandson, Steven J. (Noelle) Hoover of Rolesville and great granddaughters Kailyn and Aubrie Hoover of Rolesville.
