Mrs. King peacefully passed away at a local hospital.

Viewing is Wednesday, June 25th, 2014 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Mortuary.

Hazel Vercelle Marshall King was born July 18, 1929 in Gulfport, Mississippi. She was the only child born to Eddie Marshall and Rosie Avery Marshall. She spent her childhood in Gulfport, where she attended school and graduated early in the eleventh grade from the 33rd Street High School. Immediately afterwards, at the age of fifteen, Hazel enrolled at Jackson State University, where she graduated with the Class of 1950, earning her Bachelor’s Degree and becoming a Registered Nurse.

Hazel later met Allen George King of the United States Navy. They were united in marriage in 1953. Shortly afterwards, Hazel joined her husband in San Diego, California where he was stationed. Their union was blessed with three sons, Fabian, Maurice and Timothy. Allen passed away in 1963.

During the late 1960s, Hazel and her family joined St.

Hazel was one of the first African-American Nurses to work for the San Diego County Hospital, which is now known as U.C.S.D. Medical Center. She also worked at Sharp, Scripps, Mercy, Balboa and Paradise Valley Hospitals.

Hazel enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and stamp collecting. She especially enjoyed baking cakes and cookies. Often her son’s friends would come over for a slice of cake or a handful of cookies, because they knew Mrs. King always had something freshly baked in her kitchen. She was also known for making the best Gumbo and Jambalaya.

On Wednesday, June 18, 2014, Hazel Vercelle Marshall King was called from earthly labor to eternal rest. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Fabian King, Sr., Timothy King and Maurice King; grandsons, Kelesio, Allen II and Fabian Jr.; granddaughters, Tia, Zethema and Abbra; fourteen great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
