Hazel F. Swearingen, 99, of Virginia, IL, and formerly of Jacksonville, IL died Monday, March 10, 2008, at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia. She was born March 2, 1909, in Ellis Grove, Randolph County, IL; the daughter of Louis and Meta Reisner Steffens. She married James B. Swearingen in 1929 in Salt Lake City, UT. He preceded her in death in 1934.

She is survived by a daughter, Oueda Fairfield of Jacksonville; two sons, Gerald B. Swearingen of rural Jacksonville and Lowell L. Swearingen (wife, Joan) of Stonington; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Pearl Fleming of California; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; a son-in-law, Clifford Fairfield; six brothers; and four sisters.

Mrs. Swearingen was a cook in the Jacksonville High School cafeteria for 29 years prior to retiring. While retired, she served as a caregiver and homemaker for the Visiting Nurses Association for 15 years. She was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Jacksonville.
