Hazel B. Vreeland, 83, of Elkhart, passed away at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart, after an extended illness.

She was born in Goshen on July 28, 1929, to the late George Sr. and Velma (Crist) Van Diepenbos.

Surviving are her daughters, Sandra Holliday and Roxanne Habel, both of Elkhart; sons Robert “Bob” (Tonda) Alwine of Franklin, Tenn., and Roger (Trudi) Alwine of Elkhart; her sister, Elsie (Devon) Kobold of Elkhart; grandchildren Nick, Marc, Jason, Christopher, Dale and Roger Jr. Alwine, Travis Chilcott and Cari and Adam Troyer; and great-grandchildren Noah, Nathaniel, Lucas and Leah Alwine.

Hazel was preceded in death by her sisters, Frieda and Alice Christner, Fritz Whitesell, Nellie Jimison, and Ethel Kyle; brothers Fred, Hessel, and George Jr. Van Diepenbos; and a grandson, Robert Alwine.

Hazel retired in 1991 after working more than 18 years at Grumman-Olson Co. of Sturgis, Mich.

She was a devout member of Highland Park Baptist Church of Elkhart.

She enjoyed traveling, needlepoint, puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
