Hazel Hartley the daughter of Robert and Sarah (Sadie) Degenhardt was born December 22, 1910 in rural Hebron, NE. She departed this life Monday May 5, 2008 at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, NE at the age of 97 years.
Hazel has spent her life in Thayer county. She was one of five children, all of whom are deceased. Hazel was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Hebron. She attended country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from Hebron High School with the class of 1928.
She then farmed with her family. Bill was a guest at a party that Hazel had at her house. She was not interested in him and paid little attention to him at the party. However as time went on the two began dating, Hazel tells that Bill did not like movies so he would pick her up, take her to the movie, go on about his business and then pick her up after the movie.
The couple was married at Hazel’s home on December 25, 1931 . She recalls that she was coming down with the mumps and the next morning her neck was very swollen, they feared she would be quarantined so she pulled the collar of her coat up around her face and left the hotel they were staying at and went to stay with her grandmother until she was well.
Hazel helped on their farm and occasionally went to stay with a family with a new baby.
