Hattie Lucille Wills was born on August 23, 1921, in Ocala, Florida to her parents, Eli Cornelius Maultsby and Mabel Conner Maultsby. She was the first born in the family and the only girl, raised surrounded by her brothers, Collie and Laban. As a child, she enjoyed listening to music, singing and she loved to hum. She later studied voice and piano. She always talked about how her father, who worked in the orange groves in Florida, would bring her gifts after each work trip. Hattie always dreamed of leaving the farm and her dreams kept her motivated until her dreams came true. In 1953, Hattie united in holy matrimony to Wilton Wills, Jr. They first met in Nashville, Tennessee. They were a military family and as a result they lived in Japan, Korea and Germany. To this union, Avondine, Aljanon and Jari were born. They remember her as a mother whose pride and joy was the care and nurture of her children. The family shared many happy and precious moments together. Later she was blessed to have six grandchildren Avondine, RaShaad, Lauren, Jari, Lydia and Langston, who were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. By profession, Hattie was a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She was employed by the St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs for a number of years. She later retired from the VA Medical Center in Denver. She is remembered for her hard work, dedication and dependability. She was extremely patient and understanding when it came to the care of those patients placed in her charge. She was never a person who merely met the standards but she always exceeded them confidently and consistently. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Hattie was currently a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral of Denver and a former member of Grace Episcopal of Colorado Springs.
