Harvey Lee Stone was born October 9, 1937 in Alamance County, North Carolina. His early years were spent in Graham, North Carolina with his mother Emma Poole-Stone, father Tommy Stone, and siblings: Edna S. Nickerson, Thomas “Buddy”, Ida S. Daye, Clyde “Amp”, Hubert, Willie James, Jimmy “JC”, Rachel S. Rushing, Karethia S.

He later migrated to New York to work for the Department of Welfare where he eventually met and married his wife Trumilla Carolyn Stone. He was married to Trumilla for almost 50 years until she fell ill and passed away on December 13, 2017.  

Religion

Harvey attended Terrell’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Pittsboro, North Carolina; this was his family church.

Education

Harvey graduated from Graham High School in North Carolina. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at North Carolina A&T, a Master’s of Social Work Degree at The University of Pennsylvania, and a second Master’s Degree in Education at Queens College. He achieved his second Master’s Degree while he was working full-time, raising a family and going to school at night.  He also served for a number of years in the United States Air Force. 

Volunteering

Harvey Lee Stone volunteered in his community as a member of the Friendly Block Association and other worthwhile civic, professional, and community based organizations.  

Hobbies

Harvey enjoyed listening to music and watching classical music performances on YouTube.  Also, he liked going to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows; gardening; going to casinos; travelling; developing and directing talent shows; and his latest passion was playing bridge and socializing at The Community Bridge Home Incorporated in Cambria Heights, New York.

Family

Harvey Lee Stone was the father of Lee Harvey Stone, LMSW and father-in-law of Tanya Dunbar-Stone, MSED, LMSW of Hempstead, New York; Godfather of Iris McMillan, Kyle and Paige Beedles; mother-in-law, Estelle Chapelle, sister-in-law, Mary F. Stone, special A&T buddy, James Pettiford.  Harvey was blessed with a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and close friends that he loved like family. 

Accomplishments/Awards

Harvey was employed for decades with the New York City Department of Welfare and later New York City Department of the Aging. He retired as the Director of Rosetta Gaston Senior Citizens Center in Brownsville, New York and was immediately hired by The Wayside Outreach Program to be the Executive Director of several Senior Programs. He and his wife Trumilla were responsible for writing a grant that garnered a million dollars annually for the Wayside Meals on Wheels Program.

Sunset

God called Harvey home on Easter Sunday Morning—April 12, 2020, am at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island. He did not suffer with a long illness, according to the nurse by his side, he passed away gently and peacefully–that is exactly how he lived.
