Harvey attended Campbell Hollow School until he was old enough to join the Navy. He served with the US Navy from 1944 to 1953 during WW II and the Korean Conflict, receiving two Bronze Stars. Much of his service was in the Pacific Theater including the Philippines, Solomons and Munda. He concluded his service aboard the sub-tender USS Nereus, based out of San Diego.
He returned to Jacksonville to further his education in the sheet metal industry. He went to work for R.W. Brennan Heating and Air Conditioning for two weeks and ending up staying for over 35 years. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local #218.
Following his retirement, Harvey and Rosemary moved to The Villages, FL for a period of time. He developed a passion for golf, insistent that he rejoiced in every swing of the club, whether bad or good. When unable to play, he loved walking golf courses in search of lost balls. For a few years, he enjoyed building custom golf clubs at home. After relocating to Franklin, TN, Harvey was delighted to volunteer at the locally hosted LPGA golf tournament where he was thrilled to meet Vince Gill and Terry Bradshaw.
While in Jacksonville, Harvey was a devoted member of Central Christian Church which he served in many capacities. His most treasured event was the men’s group annual “Chili Day” at the church. More recently, he was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Franklin, TN.
Harvey loved to volunteer at Passavant Hospital and came to believe that the physical therapy department could not function without him. He was also a member of American Legion Post 279 and a life member of Amvets Post 100, both in Jacksonville.
Harvey had many interests including eating BBQ, playing pinochle and hearts, working in the yard, feeding the birds and squirrels, and rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals. A kind-hearted man, Harvey saw the “good” in everyone and everything and rarely met a person he didn’t like immediately. His favorite answer, regardless of the question, was “whatever”.
Harvey was known by many names and titles, but his favored ones were “Daddy” and “Grandpa”. He valued time spent with his family including long walks or those special service calls inspecting a home’s HVAC with his grandson, Chad, who served as his flashlight holder. Both would come home dirty and smiling.
