Harry W. “Bill” Sample, 87, of Abbeville, AL, formerly of Fortville, died August 12, 2009.

He was born on February 8, 1922, in Fortville to Harry and Harriet Sample.

He worked as an engineer on the New York Central – Pennsylvania railroad, retiring in 1985. Bill served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Fortville F&AM No. 207, the International Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and McCordsville United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Longer) Sample; children: Penny Hiigel of Gulf Breeze, FL; Daryl Sample of Tampa, FL; Beth Sample, O.D. of Pensacola, FL; and Bonnie (Mark) Sample Miller of Indianapolis; brother, Clarence Sample of Dothan, AL; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Martha Wilson.
