Harry Duane Newton, age 88, of Newnan, Georgia, formerly of Wyandotte, Michigan entered into rest on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at home in Newnan surrounded by his loving family and friends. Harry was born August 28, 1926 and raised in Ithaca, Michigan, the son of Floyd Mark and Effie Smith Newton. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Evelyn Peters Newton, and his brothers Wilbur and Kenneth Newton. He was inducted into the United States Army on December 7, 1944, and served in the Pacific Theater, earning an Army of Occupation Medal (Japan); Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon w/l Bronze Battle Star Victory Medal; and Philippine Liberation Ribbon w/Bronze Battle Star. He was honorably discharged on November 22, 1946, and became a member of several military Veterans’ organizations. He never failed to stand up with his hand over his heart when the U.S. flag was displayed. Harry attended Lansing Business College where he earned an Associates’ degree. He was employed for 36 years at Hoskins Manufacturing Company in Detroit, Michigan, and retired from the sales department. Harry enjoyed trips to Hawaii which he visited over 17 times with his wife, Evelyn. He also looked forward to fishing and hunting excursions with his son, David, and various friends. One of his favorite things was working in the garden with his Shih Tzu dogs, Lucy, Boudreaux, and Frank, by his side. Harry followed the Detroit Tigers baseball team faithfully and enthusiastically remarked on their win just a few days before he passed away. Both of his children are graduates of Michigan State University, and Harry subsequently became a great fan of the MSU football team. Harry is survived by his two children and one granddaughter: daughter Karen Newton Murphy; granddaughter Cassidy Margaret Murphy; and son David (Traycee) Newton. Cassidy had a close bond with her grandfather and always affectionately called him, “Button.” Special people in Harry’s life included his brother-in-law Donald Peters and wife Joyce with whom he and Evelyn shared many fun trips; his nephew Hal (Mallory) Newton; and his WWII buddy Bill Hassinger of Edwardsburg, Michigan. Harry also loved his Georgia family: Drew Mason and daughter Hayleigh; June and Tom Evans; Ray and Laurie Evans; and caregivers Tammy Solomon and Martha Bridges. All have felt his death keenly, but have wonderful memories of a gentle man and a gentleman.
