Harry L. “Bugeye” Hostetter Jr., 90, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart Hospice House.

He was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Elkhart to the late Harry L. and Margaret (Lockwood) Hostetter Sr.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Barkman; and a brother and sister.

Harry married Virginia E. Slocum on Jan. 29, 1949, in Elkhart. She died June 8, 1987.

Surviving are a daughter, Jeanette E. Smith of Elkhart; grandchildren Karen (John) Kidder, Bryan (Diane) Smith and Scott Smith, all of Elkhart; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Harry worked for C.G. Conn for 31 years until it closed; he then worked for Vincent Bach for 12 years.

Harry was a decorated World War II U.S. Army veteran with the HQ 119th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He served in five major campaigns, including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.

Harry was a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge and a life member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV Chapter 19, where he was also a member of the Honor Guard. Bugeye was a founding member of the Simonton Lake Sportsman Club and was known over the years for the crazy hats and seasonal outfits he wore.
