Harriet Maria Byers, born May 5, 1920 the daughter of George D. and Fannie (Tempel) Byers, died at the age of 94 on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Polo Rehab & Health Care Center in Polo, IL.
She taught her first year in Stephenson Co. at the Wall School. The next four years she taught in Carroll Co. at the Evergreen School. After that, she taught for 32 years in Shannon District 303. She retired in 1977 and then spent seven years as an aide.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon since 1942. Her memberships also included Carroll Co. Retired Teachers and a lifetime membership of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her nephew, Albert Byers Wirtjes along with many cherished friends, former students, and fellow teachers. Preceding her in death were her parents; her sister, Laura Byers Wirtjes; and her brother-in-law, Albert (Bert) Wirtjes.
