Harold William Hansborough Jr., 47, of Elkhart, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 24, 2009) after a sudden illness in Charleston (W.Va.) Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 14, 1961, in Elkhart to Harold William Sr. and Lena Mae (Sheppard) Hansborough. He is survived by one brother, Christopher (Brigitte) Hansborough Sr. of New Bern, N.C.; one sister, Anthonette Hansborough of Jacksonville, Fla.; his mother, Lena M. (Stephen) Hansborough-Brown of Elkhart; his father, Harold Hansborough Sr. of Elkhart; and his grandmother, Marie Hansborough of Elkhart.

Grandparents Vernon Hansborough, and Marshall and Martha Sheppard, preceded him in death. Mr. Hansborough was a CNA and worked for Nurse Finders, South Bend. He was a 1980 graduate of Memorial High School and was Elkhart’s first black drum major. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and graduated from Ivy Tech Community College.

He was a member of St. James AME Church, Elkhart, and was active in the church’s music ministry. A professional drummer, Mr. Hansborough was affiliated with several area music groups and bands. He served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy.
