Harold “JR” Fortney, (88) of Grafton, WV passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at United Hospital Center, in Clarksburg, WV.
He was born in Flemington, WV on February 12, 1930, son of the late Harold G. and Nellie (Sapp) Fortney; and husband of the late, Dorothy Helen (Plott) Fortney, his beloved wife of 65 years.
In addition to his parents and his wife, (JR) was preceded in death by two sisters: Rheta Fortney Westerman Zorik; and Catherine Marie Gelhausen.
(JR) resided most of his life in Grafton. He was a faithful Christian and devoted his time to God, family and the church. He enjoyed reading and studying his Bible, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Blueville Church of Christ for more than 60 yrs., where he served as an elder, Sunday school teacher and treasurer. After he retired from the B & O Railroad, he enjoyed traveling with his wife to Colorado, California and Maryland to visit his children and grandchildren. For more than 10 years, he volunteered, along with his wife, at the Bread of Life Mission in Grafton, where he led prayers and shared God’s word. He loved crossword puzzles and other board games, but his favorite game of all was checkers-and he was a master player.
He is survived by four children: Gayla & (Allan) Wick of Thornton, CO; Donna & (Jim) Morgan of Grafton, WV; Lisa &(Todd) Everly of Lusby, MD; Joseph & (Cheryl) Fortney of Texas. 11 Grandchildren: Alexandra & (Michael) Whetstine& Joshua Feagin; Rachel, Sarah & Jacob Morgan; Joshua, Anthony & Travis Fortney; Abbie, Ashley and Ethan Everly. Four great-grandchildren: Axel, Joshua & Ethan Feagin and Zane Fortney.
One brother, Kenneth F. (Brenda) Fortney of Shinnston; One sister, Edith (Donald) Gull of Traps Springs Rd., Grafton; and survived by numerous nieces and nephews and family members.
He was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin and friend and will be dearly missed.
November 30th from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
(JR) will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m.
