Harold Joseph Stirling passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2017.
Hal was born in Leeds, Utah on March 13, 1923. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1946. His first duty was with the 97th Constabulary Signal Squadron in Germany. In 1952 he received a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois. He became Director of Systems Engineering in the Office of the International Mallard Project based in Ft. Monmouth, N.J.
Overseas assignments included tours in Europe, the Far East and Middle East. At the time of this retirement he was Director, Special Scientific Activities for the Safeguard Communications Agency in Ft. Huachuca, AZ.
After retiring from the U.S. Army as a Colonel in 1973, Hal was active in both the West Point Society of the Space Coast and the Military Officers Association of America (formerly TROA). He served as president of TROA in 1989.
Hal is survived by his daughter JoAnn and son, Harold Jr. and his wife, Patti, daughter Amber and her husband Jeff. He is preceded in death by his wife Lucille of 33 years and his second wife Flora of 30 years.
